SPEED-CHANGE GEARING.
application filed June 1, 1910. Serial No. 564,381.
To all 'wkomz't may concern:- A
dent of Milwaukee, in the: county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have. made a new and useful Invention in Speed- Change Gearing, of which the following is has particularly to do with the operating.
a specification.
This invention relates to power transmission mechanism and more particularly to change speed mechanisinfor'use in motor vehicles. v I In a co-pending application for United States Letters Patent, Serial No. 460,07 5, I have illustrated and described a change speed mechanism, and the present invention and controlling device for such mechanism;
an object being to produce a single hand lever operated device for controlling and operating the change speed mechanism of said application. This, as well as other ob jects which will readily appear to those skilled inthis art, I attain by means of the device described in the specification and illustrated in the drawings accompanyingthe same and forming apart of this application and throughout which like elements are denoted by like characters.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional ,view of a change speed mechamsm with which this invention is capable .of be ing utilized. Figs. 2 and 3 are detailed views of portions of the device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detailed view of a portion of the reversing gears of the device shown in Fig. 1. Fig; 5 is a detailed view of one of the jaw clutch operating devices of the device of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a view in elevation of the single lever controlling and operating device of this invention. As shown the jaw clutches of thechange speed device are in the ahead position and the hand lever in neutral position; Fig. 7 is a' view similar to Fig. 6 but as illustrated, the
jaw clutches are in the reverse position while the hand lever is shown in the low speed position. Figs. 8 and 9 are detail views of a modification of a portion of this invention.
As this invention consists more orless in the combination of a specific formof change 7 speed device and the controlling and operating mechanism therefor, it is believed that a description of the change speed device Specification of Letters Patent.
bearings 13, 1 1 and ed to be connected to Patented Aug.
Will a bi benefit in describing the entire combination. The change speed device consists of a casing 10 within which two aurially alined. shafts 11 and 12 are journaled in 15 and which are adaptvices for driving shaftll in the opposite diwill term the driving shaft, can either be the engine shaft or a shaft nected thereto or connected thereto by means of a friction clutch device. a driven shaft and this willbe connected in any suitable manner by means of difierentm The friction clutch for directly connecting shafts 11 and 12 is housed within a casing 16 preferably formed integral with shaft 12 and said housing carries a ball bearing 17 for the end of shaft 11.- The high speed friction clutch includes annular metallic casing plates 18 which are positively to casing or housin 16 and consequently revolve therewith. hese plates 18 alternate with shaft plates 20 feathered to a hub portion 21,- keyedIat 22 to shaft 11. A pressure plate 23 which is caused to rotate with housing 16 is movable longitudinally of hub 21so as to apply pressure to the interleaving plates 18 and 19 by means of pressure pins 2 1 and actuating levers 25 which are pivoted at 26 to the end plate of the housing.
The intermediate speed device contains a friction clutch similar to the one just described but instead of having the last plate 18 abutting against housing 16, a stop plate 27 is provided which abuts against shoulders formed in housing 16 as shown in Fig. 3 and is caused to rotate with said housing. The shaft plates of the intermediate fric tion clutch are feathered to a hub portion 28 keyed to telescoping shaft 29 at 30. Telescoping shaft 29 surrounds shaft 11, is journaled in suitable ball bearings 31 and 32, and is provided with a gear 33. This friction clutch device for the intermediate gear device is operated by means of a pressure positively con- Shaft 11 Iterin connected by means of projections'lS Y gether by means of a 1 either the intermediate or the lowspeed derection from shaft 12.. Shaft 12, which I fit levers 36. I v
The low speed gear device/is provided with a stop plate 37 (see Fig. 2) which forms an abutment for the interleaving plate, 3%, I pressure pins 35, land pivoted disks ofthe low speed'clutch which are adapted to be'forced together by means of pressure plate 38 and pressure plns 39 and pivoted levers 40. The shaft or loose disks 'of the low speed device, are feathered to a hub member 41 which is keyed to a telescoping sleeve l2at 43. The sleeve 42 is pro-' vided with a gear member 44. Slidably mounted onsleeve 42 is a clutch actuating member 45 provided with an inclined face 46 and a straight cylindrical face 4-7. By
means of a collar 48, pins 49 projecting therefrom, bell crank lever 50 and actuating rod51, actuating member l5 is adapted to be slid along sleeve 42. V The long arms of levers 4:0, 36 and 25 are of different lengths so that as actuating member 45 is slid or moved in a direction away from the clutch device, the levers 40, 36 and'25 are moved in succession, by means of inclined-surface 46, to operate the pressure pins 39, 35 and 24, thus operating the low intermediate'and high speed clutches in succession and in the order given. Ashaft 52 journaled in suitable bearings 53and 54 has a gear 55 keyed thereto and which meshes with a gear 56 loosely mounted on illustrated, is provided with teeth or jaws GO'and 61 on its opposite faces and is adapt ed to be moved to different positions on shaft 11 by means of ashaft 62 and the connecting mechanism illustrated in Fig. 5. Gear 56 which is loosely mounted on shaft 11 is provided with teeth or jaws 63 with which.
teeth 6lare adapted to engage when mem her 59 is moved to one limit of its travel. "When jaw clutch member 59 is in what may be termed ahead position; that is, when it looks gear 56 to shaft 11, it will be seen that shaft 11 may either be driven through the low speed device consisting of the low speed friction clutch and gears 44, 57, 55, and 56 or the intermediate set consisting of the in termediate friction clutch and gears 33, 58, 55 and 56, or, shaft 11 may be driven from shaft 12 direct through the high speed friction clutch; In the latter case shaft 52 will be driven by gear 55 and will overrun gears 57 and 58. I
The reversing gears of the device consist menace of a gear 64 loosely mounted on 5?.
gear 65 loosely mounted on shaft 11, and an idler gear 66 mounted on a short shaft 6"! projecting inwardly from one end of casing 10. A jaw clutch member 68 feathered to shaft 52 or mounted on a squared portion thereof as illustrated, is provided with teeth 69 on one face thereof and these are adapted to engage with teeth 70 formed in one end of gear 64:. When it is desired-to drive shaft 11 in the reverse direction from shaft 12, gear 65 is connected to shaft 11 by means of jaw clutch device 59 and gear 6 is connected to shaft 52 by means of jaw clutch device 68. In this way through the medium of the idler gear 66, shaft 11 may be driven by means of either the low or intermediate clutch and gearing devices in;
the reverse direction from shaft 12. I
The oontromng deoice.-'As before stated,
. an object of this invention has been to produce a device for controlling and operating the clutch and gearing change speed device 'abovedescribed which may be worked by means of a single hand lever for throwing the ahead gear devices into low, intermediate and high positions and the reverse gear devices into low and intermediate positions.
The three plate clutches are operated by means of a hand lever 7 2 to which their oner- :5
ating sleeve 45 is connected through hell crank lever'50 by meansof a rod 51 con 1 nected to one arm of said hell crank lever by notch 78. Lever 72 is provided with a latch 79 which is yieldingly held in contact with the top of sector 76 by means of a spring 80 'in the handle of said lever which operates through the medium of rod 81 and ivoted lever 82. Loosely mounted on rod 5 and alongside of sector 76 is a jaw clutch operating lever 83. J aw clutch member 59 as above stated, is shifted to its diderent positions by means of the elements illustrated in Fig. 5. These consist of the rotatable rod 62, the arms 84 which are secured thereto and which embrace pins 85 formed upon a slip ring 86 which rides in a channel provided therefor in the periphery of jaw clutch member 59. A short lever 87- is secured to the outer end of rod 62.
A device in all respects similar to the device illustrated in Fig. 5 connects jaw clutch member 68 with a rocking rod 88 to the 'outerend of which a short lever 89 is selower end of lever 83 by means of a link 91 moved by hand lever 72.
is adapted to lie within notch 97 and by means of which. lever 83 is adapted to be Operation-The change speed device illustrated in Fig. l is shown in neutral position; that. is, the-friction clutches as well as the jaw clutch devices are shown in neutral position; In-Fig. 6 lever 83 and the'links and levers connected therewith areshown-in the position they would" be with'the jaw clutch devices in the ahead or forward position, the friction clutches being in neutral position. In Fig. 7 lever 83 and the links and levers connected therewith are shownas they would be when the jaw clutch devices are in the reverse position. lhe hand lever 72 is shown in'the position it would be in if the low friction clutch were transmitting power.
move lever 83 by means of hand lever 72 from the "forward position shown'in Fig. 6 to the reverse position shown in Fig. 7 without in any way afiecting the friction clutches; This renders it unnecessary to have a neutral position for the lever 83 because hand lever 72 so far as the friction clutches are concerned, can be utilized for moving lever 83 to its difierent positions without afiecting the operation of any of the friction clutch devices. In practice, assuming that the device is set as shown in Fig. 6 and it is desired to operate the vehicle forward, the handlever will be moved forward into first the lowv then the intermediate, and then the high speed notch according to the speed at which it is desired to drive the vehicle. If it is moved into the high speed notch, it of course must be moved through first the low and then the intermediate in succession. If while it is in the high speed notch it is desired to drive the vehicle in the reverse direction, the
hand lever 7 2 will be moved to the rear until latch 98 rides into notch 97 then hand lever 72 will be moved forward carrying lever 83 with it to the position shown in Fig. 7. By raising .latch 98 lever 72 may be disengaged from lever 83 and either the low or inter-, mediate speed friction clutch device may be thrown into operation and the vehicle driven in the reverse direction at either the low or intermediate speed. The high speed clutch device is not available for use with the rever'sing mechanism for the obvious reason thatwhen the high speed friction clutch is in operation, shafts 11 and 12 are connected together to form a through shaft. 4
The linksand levers are so propor 'tionedand adjusted that it is possible to hand lever 72 to the limit of its travel in the rear direction. This will carry the top of lever 83 to the rear and when latch 98 has been disengaged from notch 97 hand lever 72 may again be moved forward past the low, intermediate and into the high speed notch. The low and intermediate clutches "will be, thrown in in succession and then shafts 11 and 12 connected directly through the high speed clutch device. Equalizer link 9% allows jaw clutch members 59 and 68 to either move together or allows one to lag behind the other in their movements; An arrangement such'as this is preferable as the clutch devices are positive.
In Figs. Sand 9 I have shown a modification which allows a single lever to be substituted for the two levers 8 7 and 89 and this does away with the necessity for the connectshifted by means of one rock shaft 62 and one lever 87 The two clutches are arranged sothat in moving into the forward or ahead position the clutch on shaft 11 will not move into contact with its coiiperating portion until the clutch on shaft 52 has moved out of contact with its cooperating portion of the reverse mechanism. i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. ihe combination of a driving element, a driven element, a set of continually-meshing speed change gears, a composite multiple disk clutch device for controlling the operation of said set of gears and for connecting said driving and driven elements, and a 1 single actuating device arranged to succes- 1 sively operate or set the different portions of said clutch device.
