Abstract

2035. Turner, B. Jan. 26. Emergency-exit fastenings; locks, key. -In an emergency-exit fastening such as that described in Specification No. 23,132, A.D. 1902, means are provided for automatically releasing the push-bar from its retaining-catch 5 as the door shuts, for enabling the operation of the bolts from outside, and for preventing forcible operation of the bult from outside by unauthorized persons. At the end of the door is mounted the catch plate 6, Figs. 5 and 6, which is adapted, when the door is closed, to be pushed in by the door frame, and cause the part 6, which acts on the lower part of the catch 5, Fig..1, to release the catch and allow the bolts to shoot and lock the door. If the door should be required for free egress and ingress, the catch plate 6 is turned into the position shown dotted in Fig. 6, where it is no longer in the path of the door frame. In a modification, a sliding bolt is mounted in the upper bolt 1 for the same purpose. The bolts can be withdrawn from the outside by means of the knob 7, the spindle 8 of which is provided with the square piece 14 which takes into a similarly shaped recess in a lever 10, which has a pin-and-slot connexion with the lever 21 through which the bolts are operated. The spindle 8 is allowed a slight longitudinal motion, and when it is pulled out the piece 14 is disengaged from the recess in the lever 10, and the knob becomes inoperative. The knob can be blocked in this position by means of a bolt 15 of a lever lock which can be brought behind the piece 14, so that operation from outside is prevented, except by the person in possession of the proper key. The ends of the recesses 22, 22 in the bolts, which engage with the operating-pins 23, 23, are bevelled as shown at 24, 24, so that if attempt is made to push back the bolts from outside when the knob is locked, the pins 23, 23 become jammed, and further motion of the bolts is prevented.
