siding in the borough of the Bronx city of New York, county of the Bronx, btate of New York, have invented a new and useful Lock, Bolt, or Catch for Doors, Vindows,
Shutters, or the like.
The present invention relates to improved locks or catches for doors, windows, shutters and the like, and particularly a lock, catch or bolt, which will automatically become positively deadlocked upon the closing of the door, so as to prevent any person from opening the same from the outside, unless they have the means of operating by key or otherwise, what corresponds to the handle in the accompanying drawings.
. The object of my invention is to provide a snap lock combined with a dead lock, working'automatically upon the closing of the door, window orshutter, and being dead- H locked when shut, the deadlock beingalso automatically disengaged whenthe handle or other opening means is actuated to openthe lock, bolt or catch, and not otherwise, the deadlock release being actuated by the slight jar occurring when the door, window or shutter is closed.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a device which may be readily incorporated in any of the well known forms of locks and which in a simplified form will be particularlyv adapted for catches for dumbwaiter doors and for doors to fire exits, and in all cases where it is desirable to, have a lock, or catch which may be readily opened fromthe inner side but which will be positively deadlocked, automatically when the door is shut, so that the bolt of the lock or catch cannot be forced back, until the opening device is actuated.
\Vith these and other objects in view my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, and will be hereinafter fully described with reference thereto and finally pointed out in theclaims.

Referring to-the drawings and more particularly to Fig. 1 thereof in which my invention is introduced in a latch such as is generally used on dumbwaiter doors, the houslng or casing 10 is provided at the foremost portion thereof with a contracted portion 11, in which is provided a squared opening12, a bolt 13 is provided in the said casing, the forward end of which is beveled so so as to slide into an opening to fit it on the door j amb and be caughtby the nose 1 1. The shaft 15 of the said bolt engages an opening 16 of the casing. As lever handle 17 is pivat 18 and extends out of an lever extends into the casing and engages at its forward end a cut out portion 21 of the bolt, the very tip of the said tongue being 7 in very close proximity to the yoke member 25. A spring 22 is provided on the shaft T 15 to press the bolt outward. A notch 23 is provided on the bolt a short distance from the yoke member 25, the said yoke member 25 being pivoted to the casing and held in engagement with the bolt by the spring 26. The following points must be noted in regard to'therelative position of the parts in this figure, namely, the action of the tongue 20 is to force the yoke 25 away from the bolt, and this action is further helped by the face of the yoke 25 being at an angle to the direcpivoted motion of the tongue.

WVhen the tongue 20 is actuated through movement of the handle 17 to Withdraw the bolt from the keeper, the end of the tongue first depresses the yoke member out of engagement with the notch 23, releasing the bolt and permitting the door to be opened. The belt is temporarily arrested and prevented from full protraction before the yoke member 29 engages the notch 30,-by means of a lug provided on the upper surface of the bolt, having a beveled face 34L which engages the beveled corner 35 of the casing 81,21 spring 82 being provided on the under side of the bolt which causes the engagement of the saidbeveled 1 surfaces.

In themodifiedform illustrated in'Figs. 7 and 8, my invention is embodied in a form of lock in which the lock proper 50 arranged on the door is provided with recesses 52 and 53, which engage projections 54c and 55 of a plate 56 secured to the door frame. Holes 57 are provided in the projections 5% which are engaged by locking member 58,

It will therefore be seen that the means for preventing full return movement of the bolt does not come into effect when the spring of the bolt is permitted to exert its full driving force. This only occurs when the bolt is fully retracted and released without the least retaining effect thereon, and if the hand is held on the handle for only a fraction of its movement, the means for preventing full return movement of the bolt will operate. The shock of compact or jar when closing the door therefore, is not essential to the positive deadlocking of the device, but will make its successful operation a certainty, and Where the spring is of insufficient strength to overcome the effect of the means for preventing full returnmovement of the bolt, the shock of impact will alone be responsible for the releasing of the bolt and the deadlocking of the device.
My invention can be employed in many forms of locking devices, and I will have it understood that I can apply it-to all forms of-snap locks, where a deadlock is also desired, and that changes in the form, position, size, or functions of the parts from those disclosed will not change the principle or sacrifice any of the advantages of my invention, and that it will not make any vital change in the advantages of the said invention either to have the impact of the door against the jamb operate the deadlock 7 setting mechanism, solely by itself, or to have the same operated and released by the sharp spring forward of the bolt when the nose of the same passes over the jamb of the door or the catch provided thereon, so,
Having thus described my invention, what 'is claimed and what is desired to be secured by Letters Patent is V 1. In a locking device, a casing, a spring bolt in said casing provided with a nose adapted to project from said casing, means for retracting the bolt within said casing, means adapted to deadlock said bolt in the fully projected position thereof, said means for retracting said bolt adapted to disengage said deadlocking means, means adapted to prevent full projected movement of said bolt after retraction and adapted to hold said bolt out of engaging position with said deadlocking means, said last named means adapted to be disengaged by shock of impact to permit full thrust movement of said bolt and engagement therewith of said deadlocking means.
2. In a locking device, a casing, a spring bolt in said casing provided with a nose adapted to project from said casing and aving a cut out portion, an independent manual lever pivoted within said casing and provided with a handle projecting outward therefrom and with a nose engaging said out out portion to retract said bolt, means adapted to deadlock said bolt in the fully projected position thereof, said lever being adapted to disengage said deadlocking means from said bolt during retraction.
3. In a locking device, a casing, a spring bolt provided with a notch therein, means adapted to engage said notch in fully projected position of said bolt to deadlock the same, means for retracting said bolt, said retracting means adapted to disengage said deadlocking means from said notch to permit full retraction of said bolt, and means adapted to prevent full return movement of said bolt, said last named means adapted to be made inoperative by shock of impact to permit full return movement of said bolt, and engagement of said deadlocking means with said notch.
4. In a locking device, a casing, a bolt provided with a notch therein, a spring on said bolt, a spring pressed yoke member adapted to engage said notch in fully projected position of said bolt to deadlock the same, a handle provided with a lever, said lever engaging said bolt and adapted to retract the same against the force of said spring, said lever being provided with means for disengaging said yoke member from said notch to permit full retraction of said bolt, means adapted to prevent full return movement of said bolt, said last named means having a holding effect non-resistant to the full projecting strength of said spring, said last named means adapted to be made inoperative by the shock of impact to permit full return movement of said bolt and engagement of said yoke with said notch.
