Abstract

1703. Blanchard, V. W. Jan. 22, 1906, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Atmospheric gas burners; lighting burners.- Gas, which at two or more preliminary stages has been mixed with air, but not so as to render it explosive, is led into a burner or combustion chamber consisting of a cylinder with internal flanges and perforated sides, and is burned therein. The gas-supply pipe 6<f> has two or more' gas nipples 6<e>, Fig. 3, which feed the primary mixing-tubes 6<c>, air being admitted at 6<d>. The mixture proceeds then to the secondary mixing- tubes 6, a further supply of air entering at 6<a>; it then passes to the burner or combustion chamber 1, where final supplies of air enter at the hood 1<d>, the casing 1<e>, and the perforations 1<b>. The internal flanges or baffles 1<a> cause the burning gas to expand and contract as' it passes through the chamber, and ensures the admixture of the air and gas. Sleeves 6<h>, 6<b>, 4<a> regulate the admission of air at the points indicated. A shield 6n prevents the back-firing in one burner from affecting the other. Ignition tubes, the inner ends of which are at the upper or lower ends of the burners 1; may be fitted as shown in Fig. 21; the mixture of gas and air is ignited at the outer end of the tube 6<j>, and the flame flashes back to the burner 1, after which the tube 6<j> is closed by a cap or by a cock 6<k>. The burner 1 is surmounted by a dome 10. In the modification shown in Fig. 19, a perforated tube 1<m> is fitted to supply air internally to the flame.
