1516. Ashton, H. T. Jan. 21. Levers.-Relates to retaining-devices for levers particularly adapted to levers for operating the speed gears of motor-cars or the valve-gears of steam-engines. The lever A is provided with a bracket A<1> having a notch B, shaped as shown in Fig. 7, with shoulders B<3>. A pin C, carried by a spring-pressed plate C<2>, engages simultaneously the notch B and one of a series of notches D<3> in the quadrant D. Opposite each notch D there is a projection D<2>. When the lever A, in the position shown in Fig. 2, is moved in either direction, the pin C is forced out of the notches B, D3 against the action of a spring. When the lever comes to the next projection D', the pin is jammed between the shoulder B<3> and the projection, thus checking the lever ; but on giving a slight backward movement, the spring presses the pin into the notches B, D<3>, locking the lever till again operated. Instead of one pin C, separate pins may be used, on the same or opposite sides of the plate C', to engage the notches on the lever and quadrant. The shape of the pins, notches, and projections may be modified, and the spring device may act towards, or at rightangles to the handle instead of acting from it. The notches D' may be undercut, in which case the plate C<2> is raised by a device manipulated by the hand when grasping the lever.
