Abstract

1151. Dewald, M. Jan. 16. Telescopes and opera and field glasses. - The hinged covers of the eyepieces of telescopes, opera glasses, &c. are connected to the suspending-cord of the instrument in such a manner that when the instrument is freely suspended the tension in the cord closes the covers, springs opening them when the instrument is raised for use. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the cord f passes through an eye e attached to the cover c. A spring h in the hinge d keeps the cover raised when the instrument is in nse. A stop g on the cord engages with the eye e and closes the cover when the instrument is suspended. In the form shown in Fig. 6, the cord is attached to the cover c at k, and passes through the eyes i, e', the latter being adjustably attached to the cover c by a screw l.
