Abstract

286. Hancock, W. Jan. 4. Wire ropes.-Stranded and other wires of iron and steel, particularly for use as lightning conductors or signal wires, or for fencing, are protected from rust and corrosion by covering the wire with lead, or other non-rusting metal, not only on the outside of the cable, but also so as to fill all the interstices between the various strands. The process may be carried out by drawing the cable A, the strands of which have been tinned, through a bath b, containing lead &c. kept in a molten condition by a gas burner c, the flames from which pass through asbestos balls d. The cable passes out through the guide neck e, and an annular space g, into which the lead flows through channels f, and in which the lead, being under pressure, thoroughly permeates the cable. A water jacket i is placed at the bottom to hasten the cooling, and is separated from the heated part of the apparatus by an asbestos &c. washer h'. The lead covering may be finally trimmed down by revolving or other cutters.
