Abstract
29,408. Morgan, T. M. Dec. 24. Cement kilns; charging and discharging; air, supplying.-A rotary cement kiln is constructed at each end with a suspended adjustable cover, and is provided at its discharge end with means for heating air by the discharged cement and for injecting it tangentially into the kiln. The discharge end of the kiln is formed with an annular plate 5 having a flange 6 which is in rubbing contact with the lining 8 of the cover 2. The interior of the cover is lined with fire-brick 8, which is preferably inclined and is provided with an arch 9 having a door 9. A. fuel-supply pipe 11 extends into an opening 10, sufficient space being allowed for the cover to be moved away from the kiln when necessary, and a packing-ring 10, preferably of asbestos, is provided to prevent air from entering the kiln. The cover is suspended by rods 17 secured to a carriage 15, which runs on a track 14 and is formed with a rim 14 for limiting its forward movement. At its lower part, the cover 2 is fitted with a spout 18 through which the cement falls into a hopper 19. The bottom of this hopper is provided with a trapdoor 25 supported by a counterbalanced lever 26 so arranged that the trap door may drop its contents for a predetermined load. The end of the lever is connected to a pawl 28 and ratchet-wheel 29 forming part of a counting - mechanism, so that the quantity of cement may be measured. Air, entering the space between the spout 18 and an adjustable collar 20, passes through the falling cement into pipes 22, 23, and is injected tangentially into the cylinder by a blast pipe 23, so as to cause a rotary spiral motion within the kiln. In order that the pipe 23 may slide within the pipe 22, the latter is preferably of elliptical section, the escape of hot air between the two pipes being prevented by a cover 24. At the changing end of the kiln, the cover 3, which is supported in the same manner as the cover 2, is formed with a flange 33 abutting against a plate 30 on the end of the kiln. The cover is provided with an escape pipe 34 for the smoke and hot gases, and, if necessary, with a blast pipe 35 ; below, and at one side of the pipe 34 is arranged a shoot 31 for feeding the cement to the kiln.
