Annular wheels; wheels with rims rotating around fixed hubs or guides; tyres, pneumatic etc.; felloes or rims; blake rims.-In order to start and stop gently the motion of a motor road vehicle and to reduce slipping and wear of tyres, a free metal rim carrying the tyre is fitted closely to the rigid felloe and is carried round solely by friction, which is adjustable. In the form shown iu Fig. 1, the rim B carrying the tyre A slides in a channel fitted upon the felloe J. The plate H can be adjusted to the friction desired Fig. 2 shows a similar tyre in which a channel-section bearing-surface is fitted to the rim B. The valve may be arranged centrally and a hollow metal felloe formed with apertures O, Fig. 3, to make it accessible. In the form shown in Fig. 6, the rim B, carrying twin tyres A, is riveted to a metal band which slides upon a wooden felloe. Adjustable plates H of L-section regulate the friction. Brake rings D, E are carried by both rim and felloe in order to stop the vehicle suddenly on emergency. In a similar form, the felloe is an iron socketed band, bevelled at one edge to engage an adjustable bevelled ring carried on the rim to adjust friction. Figs. 10 and 11 show an arrangement of brake for acting upon felloe, or felloe and rim. The shoes are pivotally suspended by a saddle H pivoted at L, and are formed with surfaces E, El engaging the adjustable plates C, and with surfaces F engaging the rim B on further inward motion.
