Abstract

28,647. Wakley, W. R. C., and Parsons, R. Dec. 15. Gas and like engines.-A deodorizer and silencer for the exhaust of internal-combustion engines, adapted for motor road vehicles and stationary petroleum engines, comprises a chamber a, Fig. 1, with an inlet pipe b and outlet pipe c for the.exhaust, into which jets or sprays are passed through perforations d in the bottom of a chamber e supplied with water, chemically treated or not, by the pipe f, from the cooler or cylinder jackets of the engine. The water passes into a receiver h provided with a cock k and a strainer for removing oil and solid matter from the exhaust gases, and is pumped through a return pipe i back to the cooler or cylinder jackets, the pump in some cases being actuated by the engine through an eccentric. In some cases, the return pipe i may be coiled and provided with gills to act as an auxiliary cooler. In modifications, Fig. 8, the water is supplied to the chamber a by a pipe f passing into the chamber, the pipe being provided with spraying-slits l. To prevent the water from being carried through the chamber a, vertical wire gauze, perforated metal, or other screens m, which may alternate with two sets of preferably inclined. or curved overlapping baffles n, are provided, the lower baffles being perforated to allow the water to pass to the receiver h. In some cases, the screens and baffles, which may be of asbestos or other suitable fibrous material, are arranged separately at different ends of the chamber. The screens may be hinged to permit them to yield to the pressure of the exhaust gases.
