Abstract

28,488. Winton, A., and Anderson, H. B. Dec. 13. Motor road vehicles.- Relates to rear-axle driving - mechanism of the kind in which the wheels are driven by means of spur pinions mounted on horizontal shafts and connected by universallyjointed shafts to the differential gear, and comprises a special construction of such mechanism and an arrangement of brakes on the rear axle The solid axle 1 has formed on it a pair of upwardly - projecting end pieces 2, which are bored to receive the wheel-bearing spindle 3, and the roller bearings 8 for the pinion shaft 9. The upper recess in the end piece 2 is large enough to allow the shaft 9 and its pinion to be removed. This shaft has a squared end to receive the socket 14 of a universal joint 15, which is connected by the shaft 16 to another universal joint carried by the shaft 19 of the differential gear. The wheel hub 13 runs on roller bearings on the spindle 3, and carries a brake drum 33, to which is bolted an internally-toothed rim 11 gearing with the pinion 10. A flange 30 on the rim 11 carries a felt or other suitable ring forming a dust-proof joint with a disk 29 on the fixed axle. On each side of the differential, gear is mounted another brake drum 36, driven through a clutch 40 from the shaft 19 and supported by roller bearings on an extension of the fixed gear case. The brake drums are enclosed by brake bands operated by levers. The axle is connected to the frame of the vehicle by pivoted radius rods.
