Abstract

1561. Winton, A., and Anderson, H. B. Jan. 21. Motor road vehicles.- An automobile is provided with a solid rear axle of bent girder iron supporting the balance gear at its centre, the ends of the axle being formed as sockets which support the bearing springs, and receive the hollow wheel-bearing spindles. The axle 1 is of curved form, and has at each end a socket 2 to which are attached the wheel supports 3, fitted with roller bearings for the road wheels. The casing 7 of the balance gear is bolted at the centre of the axle 1. Each wheel is driven by means of a removable shaft 14, squared at its outer end to receive a clutch piece 17 having teeth engaging corresponding teeth on the wheel hub, the whole being enclosed by a hub-cap 20. The arrangement of the brakes 22, 24, and the flange 23 on the end of the axle 1, are described in Specification No. 28,488, A.D. 1906. The sockets 2 form seats for the bearing-springs 26.
