Abstract

27,723. Fisher, W. Dec. 5. Movable-abutment type having rotary abutments. Fig. 1 shows two similar piston disks a on parallel shafts b, c and a common abutment plate g rotated from the wheel i, which gears with wheels j, k on the shafts. Openings are provided in the section of the plate that projects into the working chambers, to allow the radial piston disks d to pass. Ports q, r for admission and exhaust connect the valve boxes l, shown in section in Fig. 4, with the chambers. The valve-rod n is pulsated by a cam p. Steam passes to the port q through the upper opening u, and exhausts through the port r to port v; but for reverse driving, the valve-rod is raised by the eccentric s and steam is drawn from the other port u to the port r. The cam p may be made laminated to permit of variations of shape, and hence of cut-off. A rotary valve may be used. The valve boxes may be connected for compound working, or several chambers of suitable size may be arranged for multiple expansion on each shaft. Each disk may carry several pistons working in one annular chamber, or may have pistons working in different chambers separated from one another by annular plates. Any number of abutment plates may be provided, rotating at speeds determined according to particular requirements. In a modification, two abutment plates rotate oppositely face to face, so that the gap for the passage of the piston opens and closes quickly. According to the Provisional Specification, a hinged abutment may be used.
