Abstract

27,286. Backus, J. C., and Hilton, R. W. Nov. 30. Spring wheels; tyres, pneumatic; felloes or rims.-Relates to tyres of the type wherein a number of pneumatic chambers are arranged around the rim, the air within the chambers being compressed under the pressure of the vehicle, and the chambers being open to atmosphere when the pressure therein falls below that of cbe atmosphere. The felloe 1 carries the inner part 2 of the tyre, this part being made in sections bolted close together by a hook bolt 4a or similar means,Fig.2. The tread is formed of pressure members 4, attached to which are tubes 6 having returned flanges 7, Fig. 3 ; inside the tubes 6 and bearing against the members 4 are tubes 8, closed at one end and having a similar returned flange 9 ; packings 10 are placed between the flanges 7, 9, and form pistons which slide in tubes 12 fixed on the inner part 2 of the -tyre, flanges 13 on the tubes 12 providing stops for the pistons. Between the ends of the tubes 8 and the inner parts 2, coil springs 11 are interposed, and serve to return the members 4, after a depressive force has been removed. If the pressure within the chambers has fallen, valves 19 admit air from the atmosphere to the pneumatic chamber. Each valve consists of a disk 19 carrying a stem, on the end of which is an adjusting-nut 20 ; a spring is placed between this nut and perforated washer 16 fixed on the part 2 to keep the valve disk 19 on its seating. The valve chamber is connected to a channel 21 formed in the inner parts 2, the channel being in connexion with the atmosphere. Outside the tyre is a flexible tread, formed of over-lapping U-shaped sections 23, filling-pieces 25 being placed on the reduced parts of the sections, to form a continuous tread surface. Bolts 27 pass through slots 26 in the sides of the sections 23, and attach the sections 23 and side rings 28 to the tyre. The side rings 28 limit the inward movement of the pressure members 4. In a modification, each set of pneumatic chambers and springs may be duplicated, the two chambers being placed side by side transversely to the rim.
