Typewriters.-Relates to means for. varying the throw of the ribbon-vibrator in order to bring any section of a two or more coloured ribbon into use, and for rendering the vibrator inoperative in order that stencils may be cut. The vibrator 6 is carried by a rod 11, which is connected with a lever 14 pivoted to an arm on the platen-shift rail 13. The upper arm of the lever 14 is provided with an open slot, one side of which is formed by a spring 27, the other side containing two recesses 26. A pin 16 is held by the spring 27 in engagement with either of the recesses 26 and engages a slotted arm 18 on the universal bar frame 10. The pin 16 is secured to a plate 19, which rests loosely between the arm 18 and lever 14 and is guided by a slot 20 which embraces the pivot 15 of the lever 14. The pin 16 is caused to occupy either of the recesses 26, or a higher position in which it is free from the lever 14, by a forked arm 24 on a lever 22, Fig. 2, which is pivoted to the shift-rail 13. The position of the pin 16 in the slot determines the throw of the vibrator and, consequently, the section of the ribbon which covers the printing-point. When the pin is in its highest position, the lever 14 is not actuated and the vibrator remains stationary, the lever 14 being then supported by an arm 38 depending from the shift-rail. The lever 22 is connected by a link 34 with an arm 33 on a shaft 30 which can be turned by means of a crank-handle. The arm 33 is held in any one of its several positions by a spring plate 35 having projections or depressions which engage corresponding formations on the arm. In a modification, the slot in the lever 14 is closed at each end and open at an intermediate point, the receeses 26 being then dispensed with.
