UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LOUIS FAVERIO, OF WESTERLY, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO WYOKOFF, SEAMANS & BENEDICT, OF ILION, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
TYPE-WRITING- MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, LOUIS FAvERIo, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Vesterly, in the county of Washington and State of Rhode Island, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Type Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to typewriting machines and more particularly to line spacing mechanisms and one object of my invention is to provide simple and efficient means of the character specified.
Another object of my invention is to provide a construction in which a line spacing hand lever is situated at or near one end of the platen and the line spacing devices controlled thereby are situated at the other end of the platen.
A further object of my invention is to provide a construction in which a single movement of a hand lever is effective to move the carriage to the right and to effect a line spacing movement of the platen.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a construction in which said line spacing hand lever may be employed to lift the carriage.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists of the features of construction, arrangements of parts and combinations of devices to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters represent corresponding parts in the different views, Figure 1 is a fragmentary end elevation of the upper portion of a typewriting machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the carriage shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail plan view showing the hand lever, a portion of the platen frame or carriage and a portion of the connecting rod. Fig. 4 is a detail fragmentary perspective view of a carriage with the features of my invention applied thereto.
1 have shown my invention in connection with a No. 6 Remington typewriting machine to which the devices of my invention can be readily applied without making any material changes in the construction of that machine, though it should be understood that the invention may be employed in different styles of typewriting machines.
The corner posts 1 of the frame support a Specification of Letters Patent.

top plate 2 from which upwardly projecting lugs 3 extend. These lugs support a guide rail or track 4 with which rollers 5, pivoted to the carriage truck 6, cooperate. The platen frame is rectangular and comprises end bars 7, a front cross bar 8 and a rear cross bar 9. Pivots 10 connect the platen frame to links 11 which are pivoted at their lower ends 12 to the truck. A platen 13 is provided with a platen shaft 141 journaled in bearings in the end bars 7 of the platen frame. A roller 15 is carried by the front cross bar 8 of the platen frame and bears upon a shift rail 16 carried by vibratory arms or levers l? to effect a change in the case position of the platen. A line spacing ratchet wheel 18 is secured to the platen at the right hand end thereof and a roller detent 19 cooperates with the line spacing ratchet wheel in the usual manner. An upright post or standard 20 projects from the right-hand end bar 7 of the platen frame and is provided with an inwardly projecting stop pin 21 to limit the feed movement of a line spacing pawl 22 and to jam the pawl and prevent an overthrow of the platen. The line spacing pawl is connected by a horizontal pivot 23 to an actuating lever 2i which is connected to a depending bracket arm 25 on the platen frame by a horizontal pivot 26 which is in the nature of a shouldered headed screw. A forwardly extending arm 27 projects from this lever arm so as to form a bell crank lever. A second bell crank lever 28 is connected to the bracket 25 by a headed shouldered screw 29 so that the piv otal axis of the bell crank lever 28 is at right angles, or at substantially right angles, to the pivotal axis of the lever 24. The horizontally disposed arm of the bell crank lever 28 extends beneath the arm 27 of the lever 24. for cooperation therewith and the upright arm of the bell crank 28 is pivoted at 30 to a rod 31 which is connected at its opposite end to a hand lever 32 which may be situated at any convenient point along the front of the carriage, but which I prefer to mount at or near the opposite or left-hand end of the platen. The connection between the pivot rod and the hand lever is effected by a pivot screw 33. The hand lever itself is pivoted to the front cross bar 8 of the platen frame by a headed shouldered screw 34 so as to receive a horizontal pivotal movement around its pivot. An upwardly projecting arm 35 is formed on the bracket 25 and pivotally supports a regulating device 36 provided with three contact faces 37, 3S and 39 and with a handle or finger piece a0 by which it may be turned on its pivot 41 so as to bring any of the three faces to a position where it will cooperate with a depending arm 42 on the line spacing pawl. The device 36 has three notches 4C3, i t and 45 with which a detent spring 46 cooperates, the spring being secured by a screw 4:7 to the bracket arm It will be understood that the regulating device 36 limits the return movement of the line spacing pawl and its actuating lever 24-, and determines the extent of line spacing movement to be transmitted to the platen. The line spacing pawl and lever 24 are restored to normal position by the usual spring 48, whereas the lever 28, connecting rod 31 and handle 32 are acted upon by a weaker spring 18 which holds the horizontal arm of the bell crank 28 up against the lever arm 27. The normal position of the hand lever 32 depends on the adjustment of the device 36. Thus, it will be understood that when one of the three contact faces of the device 36 is brought into cooperation with the line spacing pawl, the hand lever 32 will. normally be in the position indicated by the dot and dash line a in Fig. 3, whereas under another adjustment of said device the hand lever will normally be in the position indicated by the dot and dash line b and under a third adjustment of the device 36 the hand lever will normally be in the full line position. In each instance, however, the hand lever is adapted to swing in a horizontal plane around its pivot to a position corresponding to that indicated by the dotted line a in Fig. 3.
The hand lever 32 replaces the finger piece ordinarily employed in the No. 6 Remington machine for lifting the platen frame and which is situated at about the same point that the lever 32 occupies in the present construction. The hand lever 32 is, as before stated, free to swing horizontally around its pivot but cannot move vertically independently of the platen frame so that the hand lever is adapted to swing the platen frame back to expose the writing. A single movement of the hand lever from left to right under any adjustment of the device 36 is effective not only to produce a line spacing movement of the pawl 22 but also to move the carriage to the right to begin a new line. The construction is such, furthermore, that the line spacing movement and restoration of the carriage can be effected by a single movement of the left hand without moving the right hand from the keyboard of the machine. The line spacing operation is preferably effected before the carriage is moved to the right, although the resistance offered to the turning of the platen may be such that the line spacing is not effected until the ca-r ria ,"e has reached the limit of its movement to the right when the positive resistance offered to a further movement of the carriage to the right will render the hand lever effective to actuate the line spacing mechanism.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the line spacing pawl 22 moves in a plane that extends transversely of the platen and moves fore and aft of the machine, whereas the hand lever 32 swings on its pivot in a direction at right angles to the plane of movement of the pawl and that the intermediate connections between the pawl and hand lever change the direction of power transmitted from said lever to the pawl.
In order to line space without moving the carriage, the hand lever 32 may be given a turning movement about its pivot insteadof being pushed by a single impulse toward the right. i
If desired the usual hand lever of the No. 6 Remington machine may be used instead of the lever 24, thus affording an additional hand lever at the other end of the carriage.
Various other changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen carried thereby, a line spacing ratchet wheel connected with the platen at one end thereof, a pawl cooperative with said ratchet wheel, an actuating lever pivoted to the carriage and to which said pawl is pivoted, a bell crank lever pivoted to the carriage and cooperative with said actuating lever, a hand actuated lever pivoted to the carriage and situated at or near the opposite end of'the platen, and a connecting rod between said bell crank lever and hand lever.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen carried thereby, a line spacing wheel connected with the platen at one end thereof, a line spacing pawl, an actuating lever connected to the carriage by a horizontal pivot and to which said pawl is connected by a horizontal pivot, abell crank lever connected to the carriage by a horizontal pivot which'extends at substantially right angles to the pivotal aXis of said actuating lever, a hand lever connected to the carriage by a vertically disposed pivot, and a rod connecting said bell crank lever and hand lever.
'3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a swinging carriage, a platen carried thereby, a line spacing wheel connected with the platen at one end thereof, a line spacing pawl, an actuating lever connected to the carriage by a horizontal pivot and to which said pawl is connected by a horizontal pivot, a bell crank lever connected to the carriage by a horizontal pivot which eX- tends at substantially right angles to the pivotal axis of said actuating lever, a hand lever situated at or near the opposite end of the platen and connected to the carriage by a vertically disposed pivot and operative to swing the carriage Without turning the lever on its pivot, and a rod connecting said bell crank lever and hand lever.
4:. In a typewritin machine, the combination of a swinging carriage, a platen carried thereby, a line spacing wheel connected with the platen at one end thereof, a line spacing pawl, an actuating lever connected to the carriage by a horizontal pivot and to which said pawl is connected by a horizontal pivot, a bell crank lever connected to the carriage by a horizontal pivot which extends at substant-ially right angles to the pivotal axis of said actuating lever, a hand lever situated at or near the opposite end of the platen and connected to the carriage by a vertically disposed pivot and operative to swing the carriage without turning the lever on its pivot and to effect a line spacing movement of the platen and a movement of the carriage to the right by a single movement of said hand lever from left to right, and a rod connecting said bell crank lever and hand lever.
Signed at Vesterly, in the county of Vashington, and State of Rhode Island, this 16th day of May A. D. 1907.
