Abstract

24,565. Roberts, D., and James, C. Nov. 2. Lubricating. - Internal - combustion and other fluid-pressure engines, air-compressors, pumps, &c. of the vertical enclosed type are provided with means for closing the hole in the diaphragm of the crank chamber through which the connecting-rod passes, to prevent waste lubricating-oil from the cylinder from entering the crank-chamber. This closure is effected by a number of superimposed platesj, Figs. 2 and 3, with oblong holes j<1>, sliding in guides n, the topmost plate being provided with a boss k through which the connecting-rod f passes. Any oil working through the plates from below is trapped by a lip o, and returns to the crank chamber by a pipe p. Waste oil from the cylinder c collects in a well rand drains through a pipe a. Ventilating- pipes are provided to allow for the air displacement in the upper and lower chambers. Fig. 6 shows a modification, in which the plates are replaced by a single sliding plate v, made in two parts secured together by caps w of the trunnion bearings x of the connecting-rod boss y. Fig. 8 shows a modification, consisting of a folding shutter composed of plates a' hinged together by pins e<1>, f<1>, the pins f<1> moving in guide-grooves g'. In another modification, the closing-plates are attached to links of a chain working over rollers and secured at the ends to springs.
