Abstract
24,433. Robinson, A. S. F. Nov. 1. Clutches.-Relates to rope-coil clutches of the type described in Specification No. 19,500, A.D. 1906, applicable to motor-cars &c. The driving- shaft 24, Figs. 6 and 7, carries a drum b to a pin n in which one end m of the rope is secured. The rope passes round the section 1 of the driven drum a over a guide-pulley q, and over one pulley f carried by the actuating-disk e. Thence the rope returns over the pulley r to the section 2 of the drum a over a pulley p and spring-held saddle 14, Fig. 5a, to a pulley s and the drum section 3. Then, by way of a pulley w and the second pulley f on the disk e, the rope returns to a pulley z and over the drum section 4 to a fixing-pin. The disk e is controlled by a spring 19 and by a lever-operated sleeve g, and is connected to the drum b by a pin 20<a>. The drum sections may be covered by the rope in the order 1, 2, 4, 3. In the latter case, when the clutch is required to run in both directions with equal drive, the rope is wound in the opposite directions round the sections 4, 3. The portion of the rope between the pulleys on the sliding disk need not be formed into coils. The rope may be passed over eight drum sections, as shown in Fig. 4. The rope end m is secured to a pin n on the drum b, is passed over sections 2, 1 to the disk e, over sections 3, 4, 8, 7 to the disk e, and finally over the sections 5, 6 to the pin 10 on the drum b. The actuating-disk B, Fig. 3, may be provided with three or more equally-spaced pulleys K, an endless rope being passed round one drum section and then over one pulley K, and so on. According to the Provisional Specification, a clutch with two ropes, as in Specification No. 19,500, A.D. 1906, may have the ropes arranged to drive in opposite directions.
