Abstract
24,237. Taylor, J. S. Oct. 30. Hubs; axle-boxes; spokes.-Relates to a metallic dust-proof hub for vehicle wheels, and to means for securing it upon the axle. The axle 1 is secured by means of a tapered pin 3 passing through a transverse slot to a sleeve 10, which is held in place by fibre packing-rings 12 between the parts 7, 8 of a divided axle-box made of cast metal. The part 7 is provided with a collar 4, and the collar and the axle are provided with corresponding projections and recesses 4d, 2, 5, so that dust is completely excluded from a packing- washer 4<b> held in place by a fibre ring. Spaces 4<a> are left so as to prevent rattling when the washer 4b is worn. The part 8 of the axle-box, which screws on the part 7, provides an abutment for the hub flange 11 secured thereon by a key 14<a>, and forms a seating for the spokes, which are secured between the hub flanges by rivets 14<b> passed through the junction of alternate spokes. The flanges are made of non - brittle metal, and the parts are tightened together by means of a screwed cap 17. The annular space between the part 8 and the sleeve 10 forms an oil chamber for lubricating purposes.
