23,176. Ratcliffe, B. S. Oct. 19. Cleaning pipes and tubes.-Relates to percussive tools for removing scale or incrustation from boiler and other tubes. A circular cutter head c carries radially-adjustable cutters adapted to act on the scale in a direction parallel to the surface of the tube. The cutters e, the cutting-edges of which may be of any suitable form, rest in radial grooves c<2> on the face of the cutter head and have screw-threaded stems e', which pass through rectangular slots in the cutter head and are secured by nuts e'. A socket c<1> is provided, which screws upon the extension c<3> of a stud c<5> and is prevented from working loose by a pin c<6>. A fluid-preesure or other hammer b<8> delivers a rapid succession of blows upon the end of the stud c<5>, which is of octagonal or other cross-section to prevent rotation and works in a perforation in the end of the cylinder b. A projection c' is provided, against which a spring d bears to retract the tool. The cylinder b is formed with projecting guides b<1>, b<3> serving to keep the tool central, and a handle b<6> is provided by which the tool may be rotated. In a modification, Fig. 13, two sets of cutters are used. A plate-like set of serrated cutters f, having grooves and rectangular slots, is placed in the grooves c', and the cutters e<#> are placed in the grooves of the cutters f. The two sets are independently adjustable, and are arranged so that the leading cutters. remove the inner surface of the incrustation, the finishing cutters removing the scale close up to the metal of the tube.
