Abstract

22,166. Carrick, J. T., and Pattison, S. Oct. 8. Cupola furnaces.-In a process for the treatment of pyritic copper or nickel or copper-nickel sulphide ores, sulphuretted hydrogen evolved from the treatment of the matte first produced with sulphuric acid is passed into the cupola through a special set of tuyeres located adjacent to the air tuyeres. The gas in burning with the air constitutes part or the whole of the fuel necessary for the reduction of further quantities of ore. The intense heat so produced in the neighbourhood of the tuyeres prevents the formation of crusts, and so enables the whole series of tuyeres to be kept continuously in blast. The percentage ot sulphur dioxide in the flue gases is also increased, the gases being utilized for the manufacture of sulphuric acid.
