Abstract

26,370. Hall, W. A. Nov. 16. Sulphur evolved from pyrites in water-jacketed pyritic smelting-furnaces is recovered and the discharge from the furnace of noxious gases is prevented by introducing a reducing-gas in the upper level of the furnace, with or without steam or water vapour, and passing the products of combustion carrying the elemental sulphur through separating - devices, for example the Thiesen type of washer or condenser. The reducing-gas may be water-gas or producergas, and may be admitted at or near the point of introduction of the pyritic charge, together with a volume of air less than would ordinarily accompany the charge. The volatilization of the sulphur from the pyrites is effected by the temperature imparted to the upper portions thereof by the combustion of the sulphur and iron in the fusion zone. The stable equivalent for the iron is atmospheric oxygen from the air admitted through the tuyeres and the silica of the quartz which is present as usual in smelting.
