Ladders.-A ladder, particularly applicable to sleeping-berths in ships, railway cars, &c., is provided with pivoted steps e, Fig. 2, adapted to be folded into the plane of the sides, and furnished with folding stays f, f<1>. Figs. 5 and 7 show the steps and stays in the folded position. The sides a may be tubular and are braced together at the top and bottom by tubular or other cross-stays. A pair of handles or grips c and hooks b adapted to engage a rail b<1> of an upper berth are provided at the top, while at the bottom are forked pivoted arms d, adapted to engage a rail d<4> and hold the ladder at a proper inclination. To the sides of the steps e are fixed shoes e<2> the ends of which are pivoted to the ladder sides. A stop h, Fig. 6, on each stay member f engages the member f<1> in order to limit the opening-out movement of the steps. When the steps are being opened out, cam-like projections g, fixed to the shoes e, impart a slight angular motion to the members f and thus facilitate the unfolding of the stays. In collapsing the'steps, a stop j on each or either of the shoes e<2> first engages the back edge of the stay member f<1> and then a stop i on the member f<1> enters a notch i<1> in the member f in order to limit the folding movement.
