Abstract

21,081. Coles, S. O. Cowper-. Sept. 22. Making iron tubes.-Cathode rollers c, Fig. 1, of iron or other metal or alloy are mounted by pins d upon bearings e in the vat a, the bearings being wholly or in part made of insulating-material to insulate the cathodes from the lead or iron lining of the vat. Each roller is provided at one end with ratchet teeth f so as to be rotated slowly by means of a pawl g, the several pawls being mounted on a reciprocating rod h sliding in brackets h' on the edge of the vat. Each pawl has a joint i so that any one can be thrown out of gear and the roller removed without stopping the others. Cast-iron anodes j, Fig. 2, are connected by rods k to a bus-bar l; in order that they may be approached towards the mandrels as they dissolve away, the anodes are mounted upon inclined wooden blocks m, and are moved up these inclines by means of wedges n, the connexions k sliding in slots in the bar l to allow this movement. Each cathode is provided with a contact-brush carried by a bracket fixed to a common bus-bar.
