Abstract

20,322. Thompson, W. P., [Prelini, C.]. Sept. 12. Tunnelling.-A tunnelling-shield is composed of two telescopic sections, each of which contains a hollow diaphragm and capable of being advanced independently of the other. The rear section A is advanced by means of a set of jacks E, the pistons of which bear against the lining of the tunnel; it contains the diaphragm D which encloses a space G forming a " de-compressing " chamber. The diaphragm is formed of a box girder C, which is bent to the circular or other cross-sectional form of the part A and is provided with steel plates d, d<1> on either side ; sliding doors h, h<1> are also provided near the base, and the whole is strengthened by means of internal girders e, f. The plates d' support a second set of jacks F used to advance the forward section B, the pistons of the jacks being connected to the second diaphragm H in order to prevent rotation of the shield. The front i of this section is hood-shaped and provided with a cutting-edge l. A platform I, which may support a rock drill, is supported on brackets in front of the second diaphragm H. Between the diaphragms is a safety chamber J into which the operators can retreat in case of accident; the chamber also serves as an air-lock within which sufficient pressure can be maintained to exclude water which may break through to the working chamber.
