Abstract

19 945. Boyle, J., and Hartley, H. Sept. 7. Secondary batteries. - The positive plates a are made from compressed powdered lead which may be obtained by precipitation from lead acetate by means of zinc; these plates may be enclosed in perforated lead envelopes. The negative plates b consist of compressed powdered lead mixed with powdered copper or a copper alloy such as brass, and entirely en closed within envelopes of copper or brass gauze ; these plates are e produced by cutting and folding a sheet of gauze to the required size and shape, inserting the powdered material therein, and finally securing the gauze along its edges by wire sewing &c. The plates are separated by perforated corrugated sheets c of ebonite, celluloid, &c. According to the Provisional Specification, the positive plates may have perforated lead plates embedded therein, or may be made of lead oxide mixed or not with powdered lead, and the negative plates may have perforated brass sheets or gauze embedded therein.
