19,493. Hodgkinson, W. R. Aug. 31. Cementation.-Iron or mild steel is case-hardened by being heated in a muffle or similar chamber in an atmosphere composed of a mixture of ammonia and acetylene. The gaseous mixture may be passed into the chamber, or produced therein by adding calcium carbide to a strong ammonia solution, or by heating a mixture of calcium carbide and ammonium chloride. The gases are preferably employed in the proportion of two volumes of ammonia to one of acetylene.
