Abstract

17,777. Linfoot, E. E. Aug. 7. Copying documents.-Relates to the manufacture of manifold or impression paper having the surface of its impression coating of different reflective capacity in different regions, each of which, however, is capable of transferring an impression, and all of which may be of the same opacity but of different density. The paper 13 is reeled off a roll 2, Fig. 1, between pairs of rollers 3, 4 and 5, 6, actuated by chain and sprocket gearing, and is cut into sheets 17 by a rotating cutter 16. The paper receives a coating of impression material, such as a mixture of carbon or other colouring-matter with a suitable vehicle, from the roller 3, which extends into a heated mass of the material in a trough 15. Between the pairs of rollers is mounted a marking-roller 25, the face of which is recessed to receive a contact-plate 27, Fig. II, formed with type - like projections 28 corresponding to the desired trade mark or other marking. The projections are flush with the face of the roller, which is preferably maintained at a different temperature from the coating on the paper. In the arrangement shown, the roller is colder than the coating, with the result that the shaded portions of the web, including the letters A, B, C, will have a greater reflective capacity than the unshaded rectangular portion surrounding the letters. The contact-plate may be modified to produce various arrangements of the contrasting surfaces. The roller 25 can be adjusted to the thickness of the paper by means of a set-screw 35, and it may also be moved lengthwise of the machine to act on any coating at such a time when the most effective marking will be produced. If desired, the web 13 may be guided over the top of the roller 25 so that the projections 28 come in contact with the uncoated side of the paper.
