Abstract

14,901. Deutsche Gasgl³hlicht Akt.- Ges. (Auerges.). Oct. 28,1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Incandescent lamps.-In the manufacture of filaments and the like of metals such as tungsten, deformation is avoided by effecting the final heating by an alternating current of a periodicity somewhat greater than the usual 50 or 60 waves per second, or of a nearly-rectangular wave-form, or by a continuous current. In the latter case, the influence of magnetic fields is guarded against by enclosing the filaments in an iron casing, by neutralizing the fields, by placing the loops of the filaments at right-angles to the horizontal components of the lines of force, or by changing the position of the filaments after a time so that the distorting-forces are reversed. Conductors near the filaments are arranged so as not to generate a magnetic field. The heating may be done in a mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen.
