14,221. Alldays & Onions Pneumatic Engineering Co., and Nicholson, A. June 21. Chimneys.-In furnaces for rivetheating, forging, case-hardening, annealing and tempering, and in crucible, melting and like furnaces employing liquid or gaseous fuel, annular heating - chambers c are formed around the chimneys, and air and gas are passed through them and separately conveyed to burners a arranged external to the furnace. When liquid fuel is employed, it is supplied to the burner direct and the air is heated alone. In the arrangement shown in the Figure, air is passed into the left-hand annular chamber by a pipe d, and passes to the burners through a pipe d<2>, while the gas, after being heated in the right-hand annular chamber, passes to the burners by the pipe e<2>. To heat the air and gas separately when a furnace is provided with only one chamber, the annular chamber may be divided into two compartments by a horizontal annular diaphragm or by two longitudinal diaphragms, preferably in the same vertical plane.
