Abstract

13,831. Benson, F. B. June 16. Starching clothes; wringing-machines.-The fronts and cuffs of shirts are squeezed between flat surfaces in a starching-tub and afterwards withdrawn by wringing-rollers. In the tub b is fixed a rubberfaced plate o, while another reciprocating rubberfaced squeezer p is connected by a spring piece r to one end of a lever r<1> pivoted on a fixed part g of the lid, the other end of the lever being reciprocated by a connecting. rod s and a crank-disk s<1> on the driving-shaft. One of the wringing-rollers c is mounted in bearings e on the movable part of the lid, while the other roller d is keyed on a spindle d' mounted in bearings sliding in guides d<2> on the fixed part g. A transverse spring i is compressed centrally by a device j, and its ends bear against the ends of guided rods k bearing at their other ends on cams m on the spindle d<1>. When the rollers are not in operation, the pressure on them is released by the entry of the ends of the rods k into recesses m<1> in the cams, so deep that the spring comes against fixed stops. The parts f, g of the lid are fastened by catches f<1>. A handle h turns the roller d. According to the Provisional Specification, the face of the squeezerp is of metal, the rollers are arranged one over another, the lower roller has fast and loose pulleys, and the closing of the lid is arranged to lock the gearing so that the wringer can only operate when the tub is open.
