Abstract

12,591. Andree, W. E. May 30. Ironing-machines. -The ironing-surfaces consist of a pair of concave steam-chests, extending over rather more than a semicircle, against each of which shirt cuffs, neck-bands, &c. are pressed by a pair of padded blocks, pivoted together and preferably perforated at 21, and having their outer surfaces curved and their inner surfaces adapted to engage a wedge block. The wedge block may carry a pair of antifriction rollers in its faces, and the padded blocks are e connected by a spring 28 so that they are released from the bed when the wedge is retracted. The wedge block is carried by a rod 31 suppotted on an arm 32 which swings in a bracket on the standard, and the arm is supported by an extensible rod 34 in two parts connected by a turn buckle 47 pivoted at 35 to one arm of a bell-crank lever, the other arm of which is a pedal 38. Beside this pedal is a pedal 39, the two resting on the ends of a lever 40, so that the pedal 38 may be raised by depressing the other and may thus, by deflecting the joint 35, lower the padded blocks. The pressure over the pad is made uniform by means of a rod 41 which slides through bracket arms 42, 43 and is pivoted to the pin 21. Pressure-adjusting springs 44, 45 extend around the rod, from the bracket 42 to the head of the rod and to an adjustable collar 46. The ends of the compression blocks may be closed by cheeks held on threaded rods, and further kept in place by a stud screwed into the end of the pivot 21. A chain 55 connects the head of the rod 41 with a bracket arm 56 extending from the cross-piece 17, through the medium of a pivoted arm 57 from which an adjustable lateral arm 58 extends ; the chain may thus be lengthened when it is desired to renew the padding of the blocks. The upward movement of the arm 38 is limited by a lateral arm projecting laterally from the pedal 38 and interlocking with the pedal 39. A work-table 61 and cups 63, 64 are provided.
