Abstract

12,452. Coles, S. O. Cowper-. May 29. Ornamenting metal-surfaces.-Relates to inlaying, ornamenting, and case-hardening metallic surfaces and to coating one metal with another, and consists in exposing the metallic surface, or such parts thereof as are to be coated, to the vapour of the metal to be deposited, the volatilized metal condensing on the surface. The article to be treated is introduced into a closed vessel connected with a crucible containing zinc or other metal, preferably heated by an electric furnace. Hydrogen is passed through the molten metal to facilitate volatilization. In case-hardening, the-article is-plunged into cold water, instead of being allowed to cool gradually, after withdrawal from the closed vessel. In ornamenting a metal article, the surface is coated with a composition, such as whitening mixed with molasses, and the coating is removed from those parts of the surface to be covered with metal.
