Abstract

22,799. Simpson, W. S. Oct. 15. Case-hardening ;cementation; tempering.-Iron or steel articles are carburized by dipping or submerging them wholly or partly, without previous heating, in molten metal, such as pig iron, containing a considerable percentage of carbon and as free as possible from other impurities, and are afterwards suddenly cooled. The article, which may in some cases be moved about in the bath, is allowed to remain in contact with the molten metal until sufficiently carburized. the time depending upon the size and shape of the article, and is then suddenly cooled by dipping into water, oil, or other material, or by spraying. In some cases, such as when treating spades, shovels, and forks, the article is immersed in very fluid pig iron long enough only to allow it to acquire the temperature of the bath, and is then withdrawn, the surplus coating of molten metal removed, and the article suddenly cooled.
