Abstract
9970. Johnston, G. April 28. Couplings, automatic; buffers; draw-gear.-A central buffer coupling for railway and like rolling- stock, in which a hook-shaped bar engages with a vertically-sliding bolt, is formed with flat buffing- faces which always remain in close contact while the vehicles are coupled, motion upon curves being allowed for by mounting the couplers to swing about a vertical pivot, and, in order to facilitate the coupling of vehicles having different loads, the buffers may be arranged to have vertical play in the headstock of the vehicle. Hooks C, projecting from each buffing-face B, enter splayed openings A and engage under the bevelled edges E of slots formed in bolts D. Pins I and holes K at the top of the bolts D mutually engage, so that both bolts are raised when one of the uncoupling- arms F is operated from side handles H. The bolts may be held for shunting by a pin G<1> which engages the handle H. The coupler shank V is pivoted to the draw-bar N at O, and is centralized by a plunger T pressed by a spring S placed in a recess in the draw-bar. Buffing-springs X and draw-springs Y are fitted as shown. Hooks W are brought into operation for non-automatic coupling by swinging the couplers through a rightangle, the shanks V being held in this position by the plungers T. The draw-bars N may be arranged to have vertical play in the headstock, being kept central normally by a spring. Accorling to the Provisional Specification, the buffer heads may be arranged to have vertical play upon the pivots O.
