Abstract

9630. Compagnie de L'Industrie Electrique et MÛchanique. April 25, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Switches.-Several railway motorcontrollers are simultaneously operated from any car of the train. The work of turning is done by a local motor which continually reciprocates a pawl, and the limits of travel of the controller shaft are previously set by an electromagnet with a movable armature on the 'synchro- 'nous motor' principle, the masterswitch being composed of three brushes movable over a ring of contacts connected to respective cells of a battery. Each car is provided with a battery B, the cells of which are connected as shown to the contacts of the masterswitch C. Wires 1, 2, 3, from the three symmetrically placed brushes of the latter, run along the train and lead current to the terminals of a three-phase armature winding of an electro-magnet A, the field winding of which is excited by current in another battery circuit. The movement of the armature is transmitted to a toothed wheel r gearing with a wheel q, which is fixed to a bevelwheel n, both being loose on a shaft k. An opposite bevel wheel m, rigid with a sector i and loosely mounted on the same shaft k, is caused to turn in the opposite direction by means of an interposed wheel o on an axle p rigidly connected to the shaft. While the sector i occupies its initial position, pawls h<1>, h<2>, one on each side of a toothed wheel d on the controller shaft D, are continually oscillated by a motor E without coming into contact with the teeth. When, however, the sector i is moved aside, it comes into the line of stroke of one of the levers i<1>, i<2>, and allows the corresponding pawl to act on the wheel d. This turns the shaft D, which is geared to the shaft k by wheels t, s, and so. causes the axle p to carry the'wheel o round the circumference of the bevelwheels, and bring back the sector i towards its original position, at which point the effective action of the pawl ceases.
