Abstract

20,212. Whitney, A. N. Aug. 30. [Cognate Application, 28,560/10.] Targets. - Relates to electrical means for operating and illuminating targets, of the kind described in Specifications 6151/08 and 28,908/09. According to the first arrangement, the current passes through the two carriage rails, a motor on the carriage, and two spring: arms in contact with two insulated wheels at one side of the carriage. The circuit is closed by a simple switch, and the carriage may run round a complete circuit or may be returned to the starting-point by gravity &c. In another arrangement, the current is supplied to the motor by the two carriage rails and two insulated rails, and is reversed by a four-part switch. Fig. 3 shows a driving-motor a with permanent field-magnets, the current through the two rails b, c, insulated wheels d, e, and double spring contact arms j, k being reversed by a switch s. Fig. 4 shows a reversing-switch t on the carriage, operated by a trip lever u coming in contact with a stationary bar v carried by parallel links w. The motor is first stopped, and is then reversed by raising the bar v against the force of a spring x by a wire x<1>. In a modification, the trip lever moves over one step to stop the current, and the momentum of the carriage carries the lever up a second step to reverse the motor. Fig. 6 shows a live-stud system' for causing the carriage to travel backwards and.forwards between any two points on an endless track Two series of studs 1, 2 ... 9,10 and 11,12 ... 19, 20 are arranged between the rails, and any stud can be put in communication with the source of power by moving the corresponding switch w<1> or w<2> on to the desired contact at the end of 'the' wire. When a spring contact arm on the carriage comes in contact with the predetermined stud, a circuit is completed through an electro-magnet on the carriage and the armature reverses a switch, thus reversing the current through the motor. The carriage then travels back until a contact arm completes a circuit through a stud of the other series, whereupon the motion is again reversed. In another arrangement, a four-part reversing- switch on the carriage is operated to cut off the current to, and then reverse the main motor, by an auxiliary motor with permanent field-magnets on the carriage, and a reversing- switch near the source of power. Fig. 9 shows electric lamps 12 carried by the target beam 11 and protected by shields 13.
