Lifts.-The upper drawers or shelves of a bookcase or the like may be drawn forwards by the operation of a system of links into a position in which a flange at the back of the drawer or shelf enters a groove in the upright frame, and may then be lowered into an accessible position by pulley [cords, the weight being sustained by a weight-balanced framework running also in vertical guides. The upright frame of the book-case has formed upon each side two vertical grooves b, d, Fig. 1. In the grooves b slides a hoist frame c projecting beyond the front of the case and balanced by cords passing over pulleys at the top and terminated by a weight j. At each or one side of the rase, sliding members m with grooves x at one edge are caused to operate together by the connecting spindle u, and are connected with a lazy-tongs mechanism o, which, when operated through the levers p, q by the handle s, causes the member m to slide between the back and front of the case. The groove x in the member m engages a flange e upon the back of the movable draw f, Fig. 2, so that, when the lever s is raised, the drawer is brought to the front of the case, in which position the grooves x, d are continuous. The hoist frame held by the cord h passing over the pulleys i receives the projecting drawer, which, controlled by the cord h, may be allowed to slide in the groove d into an accessible position. The drawer may be replaced by reversing these movements. Other forms of toggle-mechanism arrangements of bell-crank levers or screw and gear may be employed for sliding the drawer backwards and forwards.
