Abstract
3570. Winand, P. Feb. 18, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Gas and like engines; gas turbines.-In engincs particularly those that are excluded from air as on submarine boats, the gaseous products of combustion are absorbed and the heat produced thereby is used to generate steam or vapour to be mixed with the combustion gases. Combustion of a hydrocarbon is supported by oxygen supplied by an alkaline peroxide or nitrate, and the resulting caustic alkali is preferably used to absorb the carbonic acid of combustion. Ammonia may be used, however, after it. has expanded in another motor, the ammonia and carbonic acid being used together for instance in a low-pressure stage of a turbine driven by the products of combustion. Steam may be generated by the heat liberated in the production of an alkaline carbonate from a peroxide and hydrocarbon and used to dilute the products of combustion. The molten hydrate may be sprayed through the carbonic acid in an absorbing-chamber. Fig. 2 shows apparatus comprising a reservoir A of alkaline peroxide supplying an oxygen-generating chamber C. Water is supplied to the chamber C by a pipe b and to the combustion chamber V to cool the combustion products by a pipe g. The products of'combustion after use in a turbine H pass to a condenser K, where the steam is condensed, and then to a chamber N, where they meet a spray of alkaline hydrate from the chamber C which absorbs the carbonic acid. The lye and uncondensed gases are drawn off by a, pump P. The oxygen may be used to support combustion in the cylinder of a reciprocating. engine L.
