Drying vegetables, fruits, tea, &c.-In vacuum apparatus wherein endless conveyers or carrier bands move in proximity to heating-bodies, the materials to be dried are subjected to different temperatures at different stages of the drying operation. A special form of charging or discharging apparatus is also described. In one arrangement, the heating-bodies b are heated to the same temperature but are situated at varying distances from the conveyers e. As shown, the upper heating plates or pipes are in contact with the conveyers, the lower heating-plates being a short distance from the travelling bands. In another arrangement, the pipes or plates b are situated at the same distance from the conveyers but are heated to different temperatures. For instance, the upper plates may be heated by steam and the lower plates by hot water. The material to be dried is supplied from a hopper g through an arrangement of two rotating rollers w. These rollers are provided with troughs v and revolve in air-tight bearings. Air is' constantly exhausted from. the space between the rollers through an outlet l fitted with a perforated disk m. The thickness of the material on the conveyer is regulated by an adjustable plate r.
