Abstract

3222. Imray, O., [Farbwerke vorm. Meister, Lucius, & Br³ning]. Feb. 9. Formaldehyde sulphoxylates are produced by treating alkali hydrosulphites with acetone or ethylmethyl ketone, crystallizing the ketone sulphoxylate in vacuo, and treating with formaldehyde. Or acetone sulphoxylate may be obtained as zinc compound by the action of zinc dust on acetone and sulphur dioxide at 50-60‹ C., and this is converted into the sodium compound by' treating it with sodium carbonate. The ketone sulphoxylate is treated with formaldehyde, and the ketone is eliminated, with formation of formaldehyde sulphoxylates. The change is readily detected because the solution of the ketone sulphoxylates treated with the equivalent proportion of formaldehyde no longer reduces indigo sulphonic acid in the cold. The formaldehyde sodium sulphoxylate may then be obtained by evaporating in vacuo. Other salts, such as zinc salts, may be used in like manner for sodium ketone sulphoxylates. The preparation of ketone sulphoxylates from acetone or ethylmethyl ketone and alkali hydrosulphites with their isolation by crystallization is described, for instance, in Specification No. 6216, A.D. 1904.
