Abstract
8544. Cross, C. F. April 13. Glucose and like carbohydrates.-A crystalline sugar is obtained by hydrolysis of a form of cellulose, or hemi-cellulose, obtained from cottonseed hulls, preferably by the process described in Specification No. 8545, A.D. 1904. The cellulose is boiled with dilute sulphuric acid, and the solution, after separation from insoluble residue, is neutralized with barium carbonate or chalk, filtered, and evaporated until sugar crystallizes, either directly or on cooling.
