Abstract

2342. Kotyra, M. Jan. 30. Linotype and like machines; type; type, setting.- Relates to a machine for perforating strips for linotype machines, type-casting machines, and the like, and is described as applied to a telegraphic perforator of the type described in Specifications No. 1239, A.D. 1858, and No. 220, A.D. 1867, [Abridgment Class Cutting &c.], and consists in operating the perforator from a keyboard mechanism, similar to that described in Specification No. 15,065, A.D. 1903, [Abridgment Class Electric telegraphs & .], by means of a number of electromagnets. The strip 5 is guided in front of a plate by rollers 21, Figs. 5 and 6, and, at each actuation of the punches, the strip is fed forwards by a starwheel 16 which engages perforations 7 made in the centre of the strip by means of a central punch 4 attached to a spring-controlled plate 10, which works in guides between plates 8, 9. The starwheel is rotated by a pawl 19 actuated from a lever 18 at each actuation of a punch. The perforations corresponding to the message are made by three punches, as 4, 4b actuated by levers from buttons 2, 2, 2, which are arranged under plungers attached to the spring-controlled armatures 38 of electro-magnets 34, 35, 36, the circuits to which are completed when a spring arm 31 on a key 22 contacts with such of the contacts 32, 32, 32b as are necessary to make the perforations corresponding to a given letter or sign. The key 22 is attached to an arm pivoted at 23 to a spring-controlled sliding carriage and provided with a rack 24, which engages a continuously driven shaft 25 by which the arm 31 is moved over the contacts and released in the manner described in Specification No. 15,065, A.D. 1903. Each key is normally kept raised by a spring. Each of the punches 4, 4 is formed with a shoulder 15, which actuates the plate 10 to which the punch 4 is attached, and by means of which the plate 10 returns the punch to its original position. The arrangement of contacts 32, 32, 32 may be varied, and each key is made to co-operate with the contacts in a manner corresponding to the sign or letter to be transmitted. The plungers of the electro-magnets may actuate pneumatic devices which operate the perforators, instead of acting directly on the perforators, and one keyboard may actuate several perforators.
