Abstract
22,844. Gell, J. Nov. 12. Telegraphs.-Relates to perforators for the tapes of telegraph transmitters. Keys 25, Fig. 5, are arranged to raise corresponding combs 19 so as to cause the necessary punches for the combination of any particular letter &c. to perforate the complete signal for any character. The marking-punches ,are arranged in two parallel banks of four, separated by spacing punches. The marking-punches are provided with shoulders 14, Fig. 2, which, by engaging with collars 15 on the spacing-punches, cause simultaneous operation. An extra independent space punch, for letter spacing, precedes and is operated by the punching of any character combination. The character combs 19 act on one or more link-mounted parallel bars 28, Fig. 6, so as to bring the selected bars into contact with contactsprings in the circuits of the punch-operating magnets, Fig. 2. These magnets correspond in number to the marking-punches and the extra space punch, the punches being struck by the bell-crank armature levers 18. The tape is fed by means of a pin roller 37 mounted on the shaft of the ratchet-wheel 38. The ratchet-wheel 38, Fig. 3, is operated by a rack 39 carried by the lever 41, and is locked by a pawl 45'. The lever 41 is brought to the feed position by a magnet 43 on the depression of a key, and the feed takes place on the release of the key, the circuit of the magnet 43 being broken, and that of the magnet 44 closed, or a spring may take the place of magnet 44. The feed is adjusted according to the signal by means of two pairs of magnets a, c, (not shown) and b, d, by means of which stops can be interposed into the path of the lever 57, the character combs 19 being arranged with extra contacts indicating the length of each signal. 75 is a dash-pot. A common spacing-key is provided for word-spacing, and a shifting-key is employed for cross-connecting the spacing-magnets a, b, c, d so as to obliterate the space between letters when it is desired to punch a combined signal, such as a two-letter signal representing a number &c.
