Abstract
1527. Merington, C. Jan. 20. Tyres, pneumatic etc.; spring wheels. - To the axle of a wheel X, Fig. 1, having a pneumatic or other elastic tyre Y is attached by a universal joint B a short axle a, on which is loosely mounted a hub a' supporting by spokes c an annular flange C of any suitable material and form which embraces the tyre. When the tyre is of solid rubber, transverse ribs on the flange engage corresponding grooves in the tyre. The flange may be provided with a rubber tread. In the form shown in Fig. 2, a stud axle D bearing a solid-tyred wheel X is attached by a universal joint d to a live or driving axle E which carries by arms or spokes e<2> passing between the spokes of the wheel a rim e<1>. Between the rim e' and a rim F carried by the spokes or other part of the wheel X is a pneumatic cushion Y<1>. In the Provisional Specification, it is stated that the springs or pivoted links may replace the pneumatic cushion Y', or that the axles D, E may be rigidly connected and bear on cushions or springs arranged in the hub of the wheel.
