Abstract

1332. Lipkowski, J. de. Nov. 21, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Points and switches, railway and tramway, operating mechanically from the vehicles. Mounted on the vehicles, in advance of the wheels, are pivoted arms a, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, carrying rollers c and _ shoes b connected to operate together, either as shown or by means of a cable connected to the lever e. When either of the arms is lowered, the corresponding roller runs on the track rail and carries the shoe in a position suitable for moving the corresponding lever h<1> or h<2>, which operates the points through the stretcher-bar 7n as desired. In a modification, the two levers h<1>, h<2> are replaced by a single lever connected to a transverse bar which projects into the path of the shoes. Various arrangements are described for adjusting the amount of travel of the levers h<1>, h<2>, typical examples of which are shown in Figs. 5,14, and 15 ; or the ends of these levers may be formed by a strip of steel of sufficient strength to yield only after the points have been actuated. Figs. 20, 21, and 22 show a modified arrangement in which the points are operated by the interaction of a spring, mounted on the arm S, and a roller Z or curved end piece y secured to the stretcher-bar. The spring may be mounted on the arm S in either of the ways shown in Fig. 21.
