Abstract

5010. Cross, E. March 10. Points and switches ; electric railways and tramways.-Comprises arrangements for mechanically operating the track and conductor points and switches of railways and tramways from the vehicles. Fig. 1 shows a plan and Fig. 2 a sectional elevation of the operating-mechanism as applied to a tramway. Near each end of the movable point a, road boxes each having a hinged cover or movable lever c<2>, c<3> are fixed in the road bed, as shown, and slots in which studs d, d' are fitted are cut in the rail. The cover c<2> is connected by a wire rope or rod f through the lever g to the point tongue a, while the cover c<3> is similarly connected to the locking-pawl h. Pivoted levers e, e<1> are connected at one end to the corresponding stud d or d', and press at the opposite end against the corresponding cover c' or c<3>. When a car approaching from the left requires to continue on the main line, the driver lowers the projection b, which, when the cover c<2> has been partially raised through the leading car wheels depressing the stud d, pulls the cover, and consequently the point tongue, over. The pawl h locks the point tongue in this position against the pressure of the spring i. To allow the tongue to move back into its normal position after the car has cleared the point, the projection b is kept lowered so as to pull the cover c<3> over when the stud d<1> has been depressed by the leading wheel. The cover c<2> is simultaneously moved into its lowered position by the spring i. In overhead-trolly electric tramways, the mechanism is suitably connected up to the conductor points.,
