Electric furnaces.-An induction furnace has an annular crucible and cover relatively rotatable to secure uniform charging and consequent uniform wear, and to allow each part of the crucible to be observed. In the form shown, the crucible is fixed and the cover rotatable, but the cover may be fixed and the crucible rotatable. The crucible 3, surrounding a core 5 with a primary winding 4, is shown provided with an arched cover 2, supported by rollers 7 on which it can be rotated. The cover may be a cupola, supported by an outer ring with rollers beneath, or by a central pillar. The cover is provided with one or more charging-openings 6, hinged, or secured, to a small car running on a track and movable to the side. Air-tight working may be secured by a water or sand seal between the moving parts, the charging-hopper having an upper and a lower valve or a screw or the like. In automatic charging, the furnace may be rotatable and supported by rollers on an annular track, the charging-apparatus and the furnace being driven by connected devices. Insulating joints are provided in the tracks and other metal parts to avoid annular circuits.
