Abstract

24,986. Evans, J., Evans, W., and Evans, J. O., [trading as Evans & Sons, J.], and Brindley, J. Dec. 2. Plunger pumps; actuating - mechanism; pump stroke, varying suction reservoirs.-In high-speed multiple-plunger pumps, the plungers 1 are actuated by means of a swashplate mechanism 13 from an electric or like motor 33. The angle of tilt of the swash plate, and therefore the stroke of the pump, can be varied while the pump is in motion by raising or lowering a rod 32, which is connected at its lower end to a link 26 attached to a sliding block 24 to which the shaft 14 is pivoted. The rod 32, which passes through a hole in the centre of the driving-shaft, rotates with the mechanism and is connected by a ball-bearing coupling 34 to the external actuating - levers shown. The shaft 14 is balanced by a weight attached to a block 25 similar to the block 24 on the opposite side of the axis. In order to prevent the pump barrel from drying out, the suction pipe 10 is arranged to open at the level of the delivery valves 5, and a vacuum chamber 9 is placed above it. The actuating - mechanism is enclosed in a casing 44, which may contain lubricant, and three small pumps 47 are provided, one for pumping oil over the moving parts, one for exhausting air from the suction chamber 9, and the other for compressing air for the air vessel. In some cases, the shaft 14 may be rigidly attached to the swash plate 13, in which case the plungers would be actuated by cam-surfaces, or the shaft may be kept vertical and the disk attached at an angle.
