Abstract

24,286. Sim, T. Nov. 24. Soil-pipe - Check valves for soil-pipes or the like, but particularly applicable for use on ships, consist of one or two counterbalanced hinged valves working upon a removable seat and casing. Fig. 2 shows the single form of valve situated in a pipe bend, with a flange b which is attached to the ship's side, and a flange c for connexion to the waste-water pipes, scuppers, soil-pipes, or the like. The valve g, with a counterbalance g', is hinged to and closes upon a metal casing e, which is cut at an angle at the bottom. Recesses are formed in the pipe into which the lugs f of the valve casing slide ; a pin d<2> engages a recess in the valve casing. When the door k is bolted on, the casing e is held securely in position. The counterbalance keeps the valve normally closed even when the ship is rolling, while the general construction facilitates removal and repair. In the double form of valve, the bottom of the casing is V-shaped, with a counterbalanced valve closing on each side. V-slides are provided for holding the valve casing in the pipe, and the pipe and casing are formed with taper wedges so that a tight joint is made. A removable door, as before, holds the device in position.
